This small design-build pavillion was completed by graduate Architecture and Landscape Architecture students on UBC’s campus. The project addresses architecture’s complicit relationship with resource consumption, using cedar timber salvaged from native western red cedar trees felled at a nearby construction site that were headed for the wood chipper.
Building on Peter Zumthor’s design for the Swiss Sound Pavilion at Expo 2000, the design employs porous wall shoring to ensure adequate airflow to dry the freshly milled timbers. After three years, the pavilion will be disassembled and the dried timber will be provided to local primary schools, where it will be used to construct planter boxes.
